Sheriff reveals more about what led to Navassa crackdown

The Sheriff of Brunswick County says his department has been receiving a number of calls about crimes in the Town of Navassa.

NAVASSA, NC (WECT) - The Sheriff of Brunswick County says his department has been receiving a number of calls about crimes in the Town of Navassa. He says they've received calls about everything from drug deals, to gang activity to rape.

"We received multiple calls and when officers arrived on scene numerous people have been aggressive towards law enforcement which has prompted our agency to have backup when we respond," said Sheriff John Ingram. He says it's a couple of criminals causing problems for the whole town.

"A few individuals are making it unbearable for the people that live in that community and we are not going to put up with it any more," explained Sheriff Ingram. The Department has served as the primary responders for Navassa for about a year, ever since the Town of Navassa shut down their Police Department.

WEATHER: Afternoon showers and T-storms

WEATHER: Afternoon showers and T-storms

Decent shower chances today – particularly this afternoon - as moisture streams ahead of a slow moving system.

As the afternoon heating gets steaming - our shower and thunderstorm chances will ramp up.

Look for highs to be seasonable, into the mid 80, with about a 50% chance at shows during the afternoon and early evening.

A similar forecast will continue into Tuesday and Wednesday with warm temperatures and unsettled afternoon conditions.

Rain chances look to improve into Wednesday as a slow moving, weak cold front makes its way across the Carolinas.  Highs will be slightly cooler and conditions cooler as we head into the weekend.
