Seahawks place Owen Spencer on practice squad

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Seattle Seahawks have place former N.C. State and North Brunswick High School wideout Owen Spencer on the team's practice squad. 

Spencer joins Seattle Thursday, just days after being waived by the Tennessee Titans on Monday.

After being signed by Tennessee as an undrafted free agent, the North Brunswick product didn't see time in any of the Titans three pre-season games.

Board of Commissioners to hear about wind power

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Commissioners will hold their bi-monthly meeting Tuesday, September 6th. One of the items on the agenda is a resolution supporting the development of offshore wind resources by the State of North Carolina.

Sarah King with the NC Sierra Club will be on hand to present the resolution to Commissioners. In her presentation, the Sierra Club estimates that the development of offshore wind industry could would create 45,000 construction jobs and 9,000 permanent jobs over the next 20 years. They estimate it could generate $22 billion in total economic benefit for the state’s economy.

If passed, the resolution would not enact any changes but be used to encourage the Governor to support the project in North Carolina.

Brunswick County Schools closed for Labor Day

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Brunswick County Schools and all county offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5 for Labor Day.

Businesses and schools will return to a regular schedule on Tuesday.

Plots available in Leland Community Garden

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — If you’re looking for a place to garden in Leland, then here is your opportunity to pick a spot.

The Leland Community Garden has 10’x20’, 10’x10’ and 4’x10’ spots available for the fall/winter growing season.

The plots are free to use and water is provided on site, according to Amy Ryan with Leland Parks and Recreation. Plots are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

North Brunswick beats East Columbus, 16-8

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — North Brunswick beat East Columbus 16-8 Friday night.

The Scorpions scored broke an 8-8 tie with a touchdown in the final 30 seconds of the game and are now 3-0. The Gators fell to 0-3.

North Brunswick will travel to Lejeune next Friday and East Columbus plays at Whiteville.
