Watch graduation ceremonies online

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Graduation is a day of celebration! But not everyone will be able to watch their family members and friends receive their coveted diplomas after four years of hard work.

As we reported earlier this month, many parents and students from Brunswick County were upset over limited graduation tickets.

However, the Brunswick County School System will provide a live video stream of each commencement ceremony this Saturday.

300,000 kids at risk of going hungry now that school's out

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Nearly 300,000 children are at risk of going hungry during the summer months in central and eastern North Carolina.

These students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, which keeps food in their bellies while school is in session.

However, during summer break, many children don't know where they'll get their next meal.

There are efforts underway to make sure little ones don't go hungry this summer.

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina is running a program called "Stop Summer Hunger."

Jeff Rose, the executive director of the Wilmington branch of the organization, said the Food Bank serves needy in the 34 counties, including New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick and Columbus counties.

He said during the summer months, when the need increases, donations tend to drop.

He's hoping to keep that from happening this summer.

Speed hump controversy creates bump in road for residents

A controversy over speed humps has created a bump in the road for many Belville residents.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A controversy over speed humps has created a bump in the road for many Belville residents.

Some people who live in the Olde Town Wynd neighborhood of Belville are outraged over newly-installed traffic calming devices.

They were made for safety reasons, but after hearing complaints from residents, town leaders are reconsidering.

Bob Uzzell has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 15 years.

"We holler at people, they come speeding through here all the time," said Uzzell. "It's useless."

Several weeks ago, the town installed the first of eight traffic calming devices in the neighborhood. Still, residents were unhappy with the size.

Originally, the speed humps were built to be 14 feet wide and three inches off the ground. But neighbors complained, saying the hump was too high, that it tore up cars and made noise.
