Two arrested on several drug-related charges; more arrests pending

LELAND, NC (WECT) – Officials arrested two people Monday in Brunswick County on various drug related charges.

According to Sgt. April Stanley with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the arrests are a result of a year-long joint investigation with the sheriff’s office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives.

The investigation ended with a search warrant Monday night around 9:00 at a residence in Windsor Park in Leland.

Stanley said authorities seized approximately three kilograms of cocaine, about $12,000 and a hand gun.

Trask at North Brunswick football game rescheduled

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Due to the threat of severe weather, the Trask at North Brunswick High School football game has been moved up in the week.

The two teams will play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The junior varsity squads will take the field at Trask at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Brunswick students won't have to pay for driver's ed

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Some school districts will charge for driver’s education course this fall in an effort to help with the budget.

According to reports, state legislators have authorized school districts to charge up to $45 for the driving course.

Students in Brunswick County, however, will not be asked to pay the fee.

Two arrested at Leland Walmart over the weekend

LELAND, NC (WECT) – The Leland Police Department has released their crime reports from this weekend. There were two incidents at the Leland Walmart on Sunday.

Around 1:30 p.m., Walmart employees reported that Richard Sealey of Leland was in the process of stealing merchandise from the store. He was arrested and charged with larcey.

Just a few hours later, Leland Police were at Walmart again, this time for a fight. Employees called police to report two male subjects fighting in the store. When Leland PD showed up, they detected the smell of alcohol from the subject. Ronald Simmons of Delco was arrested and charged with DWI and assault.

Over 50 charges filed during check in Sandy Creek

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Over 50 charges were filed during a driver’s license check in the Sandy Creek area on Friday, Aug. 19.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Navassa Police and Northwest Police conducted the check from 1 until 8 p.m., according to Sgt. April Stanley.

Here is a list of the charges:

  • Driving while license is revoked-7
  • Expired registration-4
  • No insurance-2
  • Expired inspection-2
  • Allowing unlicensed operator to drive-1

Don't drink and drive, Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Celebrations ramp us as the summer winds down in anticipation of fall. If you're going to be drinking, make sure you have a designated driver.

State and local law enforcement officers began their "Booze it & Lose it" campaign in full force on Friday, August 19 for the Labor Day holiday. Checkpoints and stepped-up patrols will continue across the state until Sept. 5 in an effort to remove impaired drivers from the roads.

According to officials, there were 500 alcohol-related crashes in North Carolina during the Labor Day campaign in 2010. Of those crashes, 30 people were killed and 395 injured.
