BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Unemployment is up in Brunswick County, according to statistics released Friday from the state.

The rate is up to 10.7% for August, compared to 10.4% in Brunswick in July.

Statewide, the unemployment rate is 10.4%.

Brunswick Chamber hires new Member Services Director

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Courtney Lewis has been hired as the new Member Services Director by the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce.

According to a news release, Lewis is from Wilmington and resides in Winnabow.

“Courtney possesses great energy and enthusiasm. She has strong ties to the Brunswick County community and has been an active volunteer for a number of organizations, including the North Carolina Azalea Festival. I am confident the Chamber membership and the community will embrace her,” said President Cathy Altman in a news release.

Food Lion hosts Family Math Night for Belville Elementary

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Interactive stations will be positioned throughout the Food Lion on Village Road Thursday for the students at Belville Elementary School to learn about math.

The school's Family Math Night will allow students to weigh fruits and vegetables and total different grocery bills. Students will also be allowed to stop by the deli todecorate a cupcake.

Store manager Tim Kittle will be providing parents and children a non-conventional way to apply classroom lessons to everyday life between 4 and 7 p.m.

School tries for cut of $1 million

LELAND, NC (WECT) - North Brunswick High School is vying for a share of $1 million in a national contest.

The Band Boosters have teamed up with the North Brunswick JROTC to compete in U.S. Cellular's Calling All Communities giveaway. 

The company is splitting up $1 million between 18 schools.  A grand prize winner will receive $150,000.  The other 17 winning schools will receive $50,000 a piece.  The money can be spent any way the school sees fit to benefit the students.

Winning schools are chosen based on how many on-line votes they get.  In order to vote, you must visit a U.S. Cellular store for a code.  Click here to find the nearest store.

Once you have the code, you can vote on-line once a day.  Voting runs through October 6.

Over 800 pet owners stood in line for rabies vaccinations

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Approximately 800 people stood in line last Saturday to have their pet given the rabies shot by Brunswick County Animal Services.

Pet owners began arriving at the various locations 30 minutes in advance, according to the Brunswick County Health Department.

"It's cheaper to do it this way, the service was quick and staff was very polite," said Leslie Stephens, who brought her cat Lizzie to the River Road Veterinary Clinic location, in a news release.
