Brunswick Co. residents eligible for appliance rebate program

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Residents in Brunswick County are eligible for an appliance rebate through the North Carolina Energy Office’s Appliance Replacement Program.

Up to $1.4 million is available in rebates to residents who purchase qualified Energy Star refrigerators, freezers or washing machines.

The program, designed to assist Hurricane Irene victims replace old or damaged appliances, will provide rebates of $200 for an E-Star freezer or dishwasher, $300 towards a new washer, $500 on any E-Star refrigerator and more.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Commissioners will meet on Monday, September 19 to discuss upgrades to emergency management equipment. Brunswick County has been awarded a Department of Homeland Security Grant for the purchase of new radios and backup generators.

The purchase of new radios would allow Brunswick County to respond to calls from  the Port of Wilmington as well as calls from other agencies who are already using the upgraded 800MHz radios. The grant is in the amount of $130,000, the County would have to pay around $40,000 to complete the match.

The board meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Government Center.

Brunswick Health Dept. offers free health exams

Brunswick Health Dept. offers free health exams

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Brunswick County Health Department will provide free health exams on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18.

The exams will take place between 9 a.m. 2 p.m. at the Government Complex in Bolivia.

Local physicians, medical personnel, and health department staff have volunteered to conduct the exams. There is no registration or identification of any kind required. 

This event is open to all citizens, but it is hoped that people without insurance or those that don't normally go to the doctor will take advantage of this opportunity.

Scorpions look to stay undefeated with game against Whiteville

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The undefeated Scorpions of North Brunswick are traveling to Whiteville for the fifth week of high school football action on Friday, Sept. 16.

North Brunswick is coming off of a 63-26 win over Lejeune last week, while Whiteville (1-3) is hoping to bounce back from a 48-14 loss to East Columbus.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Lewis to resign; Town of Leland will pay thousands in settlement

LELAND, NC (WECT) – WECT has learned that the town of Leland and a Leland Police officer have reached an agreement.

The town of Leland will be released of any liability as long as Officer Sherry Lewis resigns and the town pays her their $5,000 deductible out of the $18,000 total she will receive.

Both parties accepted the agreement.

Members of Leland Town Council meet in Thursday to discuss an incident involving an officer who says she was injured as the result of training by the Leland Police Department.

According to attorney Robert Crawford, Officer Sherry Lewis has filed an EEOC claim against the Leland Police Department claiming she was the victim of discrimination and was hurt during training.

Chief Timothy Jayne released a statement Wednesday saying his department stands behind the training and that there was "no wrongdoing by any officer of supervisor who participated in the training."

Leland insurance agent arrested for 14 counts of embezzlement

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — A Leland insurance agent was arrested Wednesday and charged with 14 counts of embezzlement, according to N.C. Department of Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin.

Earl E. Gay, 58, of 785 Green Hill Road, was placed under a $10,000 secured bond after investigators say he embezzled more than $7,000 in combined life and accident insurance premiums while working with American General Life and Accident Company in 2010.
