Jury selection underway for man shot by Bruns. Co. deputies in 2007

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man accused of assaulting a Brunswick County Sheriff's deputy turned down a plea deal and is going to trial this week.

George Cooper faces felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon on an officer. Deputies responded to his home on Maco Road in 2007 for a disturbance call.

Cooper claims the officers didn't identify themselves and he had an unloaded gun in his hand when he answered the door but never pointed it at anyone. He was shot by deputies five times.

Cooper said "no" to a plea deal Monday. Now, jury selection is underway for his trial.

The deputies were cleared in the shooting, which happened while Ronald Hewett was sheriff.
