Leland councilman facing assault charge files for re-election

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Town Councilman Herbert Barnes is defending his innocence as he prepares for the upcoming campaign season.

Barnes, who faces a charge related to domestic violence, filed for re-election Thursday.

He said it is not right for people to focus on a negative issue in his personal life.

"This personal part has hurt me so much because it's interfered with the things I truly want to do," said Barnes.

The Councilman said he would prefer folks to consider the work he's done for Leland, including his social program "Leland We Don't Know". Barnes said it won an award from the state.

"If the people want me to continue with the things I've done, they can vote for me," said Barnes.

Barnes was arrested in March, and will appear in court in September. He said the important thing for everyone to remember is that he's been charged, but not convicted.
