Brunswick Co. Health Dept. specialist retires

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) —Environmental Health Specialist Hubert Reaves is retiring from the Brunswick County Health Department on June 30.

Reaves, a resident of Bolivia, is a Food and Lodging Inspector and has worked at the health department for 28 years, according to a news release.

 The health department’s staff held a lunch for Reaves recently and presented him with the clock pictured above.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Leland Municipal Park will host a showing of “Shrek Forever After” on Saturday, June 25 beginning at dusk.

Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the free show.

North Brunswick chamber schedules awards banquet

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce will host its annual awards banquet at the Magnolia Greens Clubhouse on Thursday, June 23.

There will be a social event at 6 p.m. and a dinner at 6:30 p.m. The special guest speaker, presentations and awards will be held from 7-8:30 p.m.

Attire is business professional and the cost to attend is $25 per person.

PTO treasurer arrested on embezzlement charges

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department arrested a woman who is accused of embezzling funds.

Dana Leigh Brooks, the treasurer of Lincoln Primary School’s Parent Teacher Organization, was arrested earlier this month on a dozen counts of embezzlement.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Brooks embezzled over $5,000 from the school’s PTO since February 2011. The money came from various fundraisers and local contributions.  They were intended for projects for students at the school.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Former Brunswick County school board member Ray Gilbert has announced he will run for a spot on the board again as a Democrat.

Gilbert said in a press release that he wants “to work to ensure parents and students have a voice and are treated with respect.”

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Brunswick County Board of Education will meet on Wednesday, June 22 at 3 p.m.

The Board will enter a closed session to consider confidential personnel information and will return to an open session to possibly take action on personnel.

The following committees will meet on June 28 at the time indicated:

  • 9 a.m. Operations
  • 10 a.m. Safe Schools
  • 11 a.m. Curriculum
  • 2 p.m. Policy
  • 4 p.m. Budget
