WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Some say it's the biggest Memorial Day service in the state. The U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship celebrated its 48th Annual Memorial Day service Monday evening.

People from across the state gathered on the deck of the Battleship at 5:45 p.m. to pay their respects.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest attended the emotional event.

There was a ceremony, preceded and concluded with military musical arrangements provided by an Armed Forces band, and a 21-gun salute.

PITTSBORO, NC (WECT) – The North Brunswick team baseball team is headed to the 2A State Championship Series.  Monday night the Scorpions beat Northwood 10-5 to take the 2A East Finals Series two games to one.

With the victory North Brunswick improved to 18-11, and will face Piedmont High School in the State Championship. Game one is scheduled for 5pm Friday at Five County Stadium in Zebulon with game two Saturday at 11am. If needed game three would be played Saturday at 5pm.

For the Scorpions this is the programs second trip to the State Title Series.  Back in 1996 North Brunswick won the 1A Championship after beating Roanoke.
