Brunswick County Veterans Service hosting health fair for area vets

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Veterans are invited to attend a health fair, sponsored by Brunswick County Veterans Service and taking place Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

At the event, vets can enroll in VA healthcare, talk about health issues with VA medical personnel, and speak with their county veterans service officer, according to a press release.

To enroll in VA healthcare, interested vets should bring their DD-214 military discharges as well as their income and net worth information for 2011.

County commissioners approve pay hike for some employees

County commissioners approve pay hike for some employees

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – County Commissioners in Brunswick County voted to give some county employees a pay raise at Monday night's commissioners meeting.

The county is setting aside two-percent across the board. But, empty positions and people scoring below the cutoff point will be removed, boosting the total amount each employee could get. Employees who rank higher will get a bigger slice of the pie.

County employees last received a merit raise three years ago. It will cost a total of $983,917. The new pay rate would go into effect starting with the September 6 pay period.

Wanted: High schooler interested in the outdoors

LELAND, NC (WECT) - Love the outdoors?  There may be a position for you.

The Town of Leland is looking for a high school student to serve as a youth representative to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

Candidates must be a high school freshman, sophomore, or junior who can commit to a two-year term on the board. The position is open to any student who lives in Leland, meets the qualifications and has an interest in improving parks and recreation resources.

Whoever fills the position will work directly with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Environmental Programs. 

The town is looking for someone who can represent the interests of local students and help the department provide better recreational and cultural activities for young people.

Council members to consider easement for Progress Energy

LELAND, NC (WECT) – Council members in Leland will meet Monday afternoon for a special meeting.

According to a press release, Town Council will consider an easement for Progress Energy for the New Town Hall Complex.

The public is urged to attend this meeting, which will be held at Leland Town Hall at 2 p.m.

Navassa leaders consider having Brunswick Co. Sheriff’s Office taking over patrols

NAVASSA, NC (WECT) - Leaders in Navassa are considering having the Brunswick County Sheriff's office take over patrols there.

Mayor Eulis Willis says town leaders voted to start negotiating with the sheriff's office at a meeting Tuesday night.

He says right now, Navassa has two police officers, adding that the sheriff’s office currently patrols the area.
