LELAND, NC (WECT) – A large crowd packed town hall to talk about two issues Tuesday night at a special Leland Town Council meeting.
Niel Brooks, Leland Parks and Recreation Director, gave a presentation about why an arts center would be beneficial to the area, and residents at the meeting gave feedback on what they'd like to see.
"What we're looking for is to put forward something that the community can be encouraged about and get behind,” said Brooks. “…A cultural arts center and multi-purpose facility that everyone can have a stake in."
Councilwoman Martha Currie made a motion for Brooks to move forward and begin looking for firms to design and build the center on Magnolia Drive.
The motion passed unanimously.
The cost of the project is a little more than $1 million.
Additionally, town council adopted a resolution to recruit minority businesses for construction contracts and projects.
They decided that ten percent of the total value of work for future construction projects will be awarded to local minority businesses in the amount of $300,000 or more.
