Attention Students K through 12: Use your noodle and Doodle 4 Google by Friday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)- Attention all students K through 12 grades; here is your chance to think big and redesign Google’s logo for millions to see. Google is hosting its Doodle 4 Google contest and the deadline is this Friday, March 23.  

The theme is; “If I could travel in time, I’d visit…” which, according to the press release, will allow students to harness their curiosity to imagine the past, present or future.

Judges include: Katy Perry, Jordin Sparks, and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, co-creator and director of Disney Channel’s hit Phineas and Ferb cartoon show. They will select the top 50 designs. 

If your design does not make it to the cyber world, there is still another chance for you to showcase your work.  For the first time, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte will exhibit the artwork of the 2012 North Carolina Doodle 4 Google finalists and runner-ups.

Art Day offers fun activities for children

LELAND, NC (WECT) – Leland’s second annual Youth Art Day will be held Saturday, March 17 from 10  a.m. to 1 p.m, according to a release from the parks and recreation department.

The event is intended for children to experience various forms of art. There will be many activities for kids, including pottery, face painting and African drumming, as well as hot dogs and drinks.

The event is scheduled to be held at the Leland Recreation Building, located at 102 Town Hall Drive.

Both the Brunswick Arts Council and the North Carolina Arts Council help fund the event.

New movie being shot in Brunswick County offers chance to be a star

WINNABOW, NC (WECT) - A new film scheduled to shoot in the area is offering locals the chance to be a star.

Tuesday, Heart of the Country spent the day filming in Winnabow. It stars Gerald McRaney, who is best known for the hit TV show, Major Dad.

Heart of the Country is based on a novel of the same name.

The movie is running a "star for a day" contest, so that if you buy the e- book, which is currently on sale for $2.99, you’ll receive a code to use on the movie’s website. From there, participants will be entered into a chance to be in the film.

The contest runs through March 15.

According to the movie’s website, the film is based on a modern day retelling of the famous Prodigal Son story -- with a twist.

Entrepreneurs eligible for area awards

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –To promote businesses, entrepreneurs and higher-paying jobs in the area, UNCW’s Entrepreneurship Center and the Greater Wilmington Business Journal will be presenting the Coastal Entrepreneur Awards this spring, according to a release from a Business Journal spokesperson.

Any company, new or old, in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties is eligible, and according to a statement, businesses submitted for consideration “…Must be actively engaged in entrepreneurial activity – creating new products or services for people in the Wilmington region or beyond.”

Companies can either submit applications themselves or be nominated by clicking here.

Nominees will go through two rounds of judging. Category winners will be chosen by a group of judges selected from area business leaders as well as the competition’s sponsors.

Lincoln Elementary students participate in special assembly

Students at Lincoln Elementary School will participate in a special assembly Wednesday, February 29.

Lem Shepard will share his wonderful musical talents by tracing the history of African-American music from both the South and the North. 

Shepard's educational and entertaining historical program will act as the culminating event in the school's celebration of Black History Month. This production is brought to the school by the Bureau of Lectures and Concert Artists, Inc.

Assemblies will be held at 12:45 p.m. and 1:45 p.m.

Woodturners Association meeting to feature area artists

Woodturners Association meeting to feature area artists

LELAND, NC (WECT) - The next Wilmington Area Woodturners Association is scheduled to be held Saturday, March 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at VFW Post 9408, according to a release from the nonprofit organization.

Three area artists will be featured at the meeting.

Artist Sissy Brooks is scheduled to demonstrate the process of applying acrylic paint to a turned wooden vessel. 

Brandon Guthrie, who is a Cape Fear Community College art department instructor, will discuss dimensional concepts for project design.

Andy, Opie and Aunt Bea perform in Belville

Andy, Opie and Aunt Bea perform in Belville

BELVILLE, NC (WECT) - Fourth graders at Belville Elementary School will send an audience down memory lane.

They'll perform a musical production called "Carolina Special."

Andy, Aunt Bea, Gomer, Goober, and other residents of Mayberry will attempt to teach Opie about the state of North Carolina.

Students have been learning North Carolina history and American folk music this school year.
