LELAND, NC (WECT) – An acute psychiatric hospital for youth is coming to Leland later this year.

According to a news release from Strategic Behavioral Center, the center will be adding the 10,000 square foot building to its current one in August, and it will hold 20 beds.

Strategic Behavioral Center has three psychiatric residential treatment facilities across the state for children 12 to 17, and the group’s Leland location first opened in 2008.

The youth who stay there have chronic behaviors and mental health conditions, and they often stay in the center’s residential programs from four to six months.

“There is a significant need for inpatient psychiatric treatment in our region,” said Matt Doyle, CEO of Strategic Behavioral Center Leland, in a statement. “The entire community will benefit from opening our new acute psychiatric hospital. This will take a lot of pressure off of local hospital emergency rooms, and provide relief for youth and families who are dealing with re-occurring mental health and behavioral conditions.  Strategic Behavioral Center will also provide additional employment opportunities for qualified professionals in this area.”
