BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Brunswick stew is a delicacy around these parts, and to do it “right” is often of one’s own personal opinion. Now is your chance to prove your worthiness as a stew master.
The Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce is actively seeking chefs for the fourth annual Brunswick Stew Cook-off. The event will be held April 21 at Planet Fun/Starz Grille in Shallotte from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., according to a news release.
Area restaurants, media members, businesses, nonprofits and all interested individuals are welcome to participate in the annual cook-off by creating their signature Brunswick stew.
Each contestant is required to prepare eight gallons of Brunswick stew. Each serving should be approximately two ounces and will be served in a one ounce cup. The stew must be cooked at your restaurant/kitchen and transported by the contestant to the cook-off site on the day of the event. Entrants must also provide their own equipment to store and sustain hot food hot and cold foods cold. Electricity, burners, warmers and coolers will not be provided.
The Chamber of Commerce will reportedly provide cups, napkins, and spoons, but you must provide your own 10’ x 10’ tent, table, equipment, presentation supplies, banner (if you would like) and table decorations. Each team is permitted a maximum of three people in a booth.
Awards will be presented to the top winners in each of the individual and business contests; a cash prize will be awarded for the best stew along with bragging rights throughout Brunswick County.
2011 winners include “Judges Choice, Individual” Jeanette Gilson, “Judges Choice, Business” WHQR, and “People’s Choice” Alysa Walker.
The clock is ticking to reserve a spot in this year’s cook-off field! The entry fee is $25.
Applications for this year’s event can be uploaded from the event's website. Applications are also available at the Chamber of Commerce. The deadline for applications to be submitted via mail or brought to the Chamber of Commerce is April 2.
