BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Retha Rusk has been named Brunswick County Schools’ Principal of the Year for 2012-2013, according to a news release from school officials.
Rusk has been with Brunswick County Schools for 37 years. Prior to being principal at Lincoln Elementary, she was a teacher and computer support specialist and worked at Bolivia Elementary School, where she was twice named Teacher of the Year.
She was also assistant principal at Southport Elementary and Lincoln Elementary schools.
Rusk was also was a member of the original PBIS (positive behavior interventions and support) team at Supply Elementary School, which was the first official PBIS site in the state.
Her dedication at Lincoln Elementary helped students to grow particularly in math and reading, and she also advocates for "Habits of the Mind,” which promotes critical thinking and problem solving.
She has three sons, two of whom are Brunswick County school teachers. Her husband, Paul, is a registered nurse.
