BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is offering a self-defense class for women, according to a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.
The 12-hour-class, known as Rape Aggression Defense Systems, or R.A.D., will include basic self-defense skills and will be taught by certified R.A.D. instructors, Sgt. Bert Reaves and Deputy TK Nowell.
The class consists of a short lecture and hands-on instruction, and it’s free to any Brunswick County woman. Optional simulations with protective gear will also take place.
To become certified, Reaves and Nowell received 30 hours of training. Currently, only women and law enforcement or active military members can become certified instructors.
Girls under the age of 18 will be required to have parental consent to sign up.
