COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Several church congregations from Brunswick County will descend on Columbus County next weekend for an event organizers are calling Miracle in the Park.
Over the past couple of years, the Brookberry Park Apartment Complex in Whiteville has made headlines for shootings.
Last year, eight-year-old Breanna Shipman was shot while she was at Brookberry outside playing.
Josh Williams was shot and killed in the apartment complex parking lot earlier this year. Torres Newkirk turned himself in to authorities less than 24 hours after the shooting and was charged with first degree murder.
Curtis Shaw, who once lived in apartments where Brookberry is currently located, preaches in the parking lot at the complex every Sunday afternoon, and says he knows what it's like to grow up in that area.
On April 14, Miracle in the Park will be held. The event is geared toward youth 13-19 years old, and will feature food, music, games and ministering to assure teens that they have a safe place to go.
Shaw says there will be enough food for 1,000 people, and that 650 Bibles will be given away, along with clothing and furniture.
Brookberry Park is located at 409 West Calhoun Street in Whiteville from 4 -8 p.m.
