Former officer charged with solicitation of a minor falsely reports robbery

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A former officer with the Northwest Police Department was the victim of an armed robbery in November, 2012, but never reported the incident to authorities.

According to the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department, three people have been charged in connection to the attempted robbery of Michael Hayes, who is currently being investigated by authorities for crimes relating to the solicitation of a minor.

Officials said the group tried to rob Hayes and ultimately discharged a firearm into the vehicle Hayes was driving.

  • Discharge a Weapon into Motor Vehicle
  • Breaking and Entering
  • Larceny after Breaking and Entering
  • Larceny of a Firearm
  • Safecracking

NORTHWEST, NC (WECT) – An officer with the Northwest Police Department was arrested for solicitation of a minor for prostitution, according to the NC Department of Justice.

The police chief with the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department requested assistance from the SBI on May 8 with an investigation into Officer Michael Hayes.

Hayes was arrested and charged Wednesday morning with one count of solicitation of a minor for prostitution and one count of filing a false report.

According to Northwest Police Chief C.O. Taylor, Hayes worked for the department for about eight years and started as a sergeant working his way up to lieutenant and was a K9 officer.

Taylor was shocked when he learned Saturday Hayes was being investigated by the SBI. He said he never saw it coming.

"I was shocked and disappointed and just hoped it wasn't true," said Taylor.

Man charged in Leland for breaking and or entering

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A 22- year-old man was arrested and charged recently with breaking and or entering, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Zachary Paul Jeffery of Leland was arrested and charged on May 3.

As of the time of this posting, he has not been released.

Juvenile arrested in connection to shooting

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Leland Police Department arrested a juvenile accused of a shooting Sunday night.

According to police, a call came in around 7:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting on Old Fayetteville Road in Leland.

The victim was taken to the hospital and is in intensive care.

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office provided K9 units to help track down the suspect who was taken into custody soon after the search began.

No other details have been released.

CHARGED: Man accused of assaulting a pregnant woman

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Deputies with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office arrested a man accused of assaulting a pregnant woman in her home.

According to the sheriff's office, Joel Fernandez, 28 of Leland, is accused of breaking into the victim's home between 10-11 p.m. April 28. They say he destroyed the door frame of the victim's home.

Fernandez was arrested and charged with:

  • first Degree Burglary
  • injure to Real Property
  • assault by Strangulation
  • battery of Unborn Child
  • second Degree Rape
  • assault on a female

Fernandez is being held in the Brunswick County Detention Facility with no bond.

Two rob convenience store in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Authorities are asking for your help in locating two people accused of robbing a convenience store.

Two men walked into the Fairhaven Mini Mart in Leland around 9:23 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 armed with a handgun. One man held a customer back, while the other demanded money from the cashier. They took about $100 and ran.

Authorities say one man was around 5'7" and possibly in his early twenties. The other man was around 5'10, and thought to be in his twenties as well. They were in all black and wearing masks when they left on foot.
