BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - An area mayor has pleaded guilty to driving drunk.
According to the StarNews, Navassa Mayor Eulis Willis entered a plea deal in Brunswick County District Court Thursday, saying he wants to take full responsibility for what happened.
Back in July, Willis was stopped while driving on Cedar hill road by Navassa Police, who called highway patrol to avoid a conflict of interest.
According to the DWI report, Willis admitted to having "maybe three" drinks at the party, but wrote beside the admission, "I didn't mean that." Willis said he drinks once a month and that he should have stayed home.
The DWI report said Willis claimed to be sobering up while riding in the police car to jail. "I guess this could sober up a lot of people," Willis reportedly said.
Willis was sentenced to 12 months of unsupervised probation and will need to complete 24 hours of community service.
In 2008, the police chief of Navassa was charged with DWI and resigned a short time later. At that time, Willis was quoted as saying, "I'm disappointed that this happened. I'm understanding too, we as humans make mistakes."
