Operation Christmas Crackdown: Deputies make several drug arrests

This van was initially pulled over for a seatbelt violation, but deputies found drugs inside the vehicle.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Deputies in Brunswick County hit the streets early Wednesday morning in an effort to round up 30-40 people wanted across the county for drug charges.

Officials say the suspects made the list for "Operation Christmas Crackdown" after months of investigations and confirmed sales of drugs and/or guns.

Law enforcement caught nearly two dozen people on the list in only a few hours. Three additional arrests were also made, including a routine traffic stop that turned into a drug arrest.

Those on the round up list who were not arrested are now wanted.

Columbus County couple arrested for selling steroids

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A three month investigation led authorities to the arrest of a couple selling steroids in the mail.

Authorities found over 43,536 steroid pills, 923 10mm vials of injectable steroid, and 80 other vials at a home in Tabor City.

James and Stacy Corbett were arrested and released on September 28. They have been charged with one count each of possession of anabolic steroids with intent to sell.

Officials say the couple would put the steroids in containers and mail them to people who ordered from a Website online.

They mailed 350 packages over a three month span from post offices in Tabor City, Shallotte, Leland, Wilmington and a few other places from July to September.

What's for lunch? 2,000 bindles of drugs in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Brunswick County deputies found 2,000 bindles of drugs inside a lunch box during a traffic stop in the county Thursday.

Christopher Joseph Mosby, 43, was arrested. Mosby is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and trafficking opium or heroin. 

Chief Deputy Charlie Miller called Mosby a career criminal. He's from Springfield, New Jersey but was currently living in the Leland area. Deputies say Mosby was convicted of second degree murder in Forsyth County in 1994.

According to deputies, Mosby was the passenger in the car. His goddaughter, who is a juvenile, was driving the vehicle. Deputies say Mosby got the drugs here on a Greyhound bus from Springfield, New Jersey to Richmond, Virginia. The bus then went from Richmond through Raleigh and on to Fayetteville. Deputies say this was the result of a long time investigation and the case is still active in New Jersey.

Operation Medicine Cabinet allows Brunswick Co. residents to dispose of unwanted drugs

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Dosher Memorial Hospital is sponsoring a drive-through drug and medication collection on Thursday, Aug. 30, according to a news release.

The collection, called Operation Medicine Cabinet, aims to allow residents in Brunswick County to safely dispose of medications that are expired or not wanted.

The hospital will also be collecting pet medications and used hypodermic needles.

Drugs should be properly labeled, but personal information like names and address, should be removed or marked out.

The hospital is located at 924 N. Howe Street in Southport.

Two men sentenced for distributing cocaine

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Two men from Brunswick County were sentenced in federal court Friday for conspiring to distribute crack cocaine.

According to the Department of Justice, Jay Avery Jenerette, 25, and Mitchell Griffith, 39, were arrested in part of Operation BuggSnatcher.

During the course of the investigation, officers made six controlled purchases from Jenerette between August 2011 and October 2011 in Brunswick County. Three controlled purchases were made from Griffith between May 2011 and June 2011.

According to the DOJ, the investigation showed Griffith was responsible for distributing more than 70 kilograms of cocaine into Eastern NC between 2005 and the time of his arrest.

Jenerette and Griffith were both sentenced to at about seven and half years in jail.
