Pruden named Southeast Regional Superintendent of the Year

Brunswick County Schools is pleased to announce Superintendent Edward Pruden has been named the 2013-2014 Southeast Regional Superintendent of the Year.  The honor was bestowed by a vote of the fourteen public school superintendents that comprise the Southeast Region Superintendents’ Council.

Brunswick County Board of Education Chairman Charles Miller was thrilled to learn of the honor and quick to share his congratulations, “I am so proud of Dr. Pruden.  This honor represents the hard work and dedication he has not only to our students and staff in Brunswick County, but for public education in North Carolina.  We are so fortunate he is our superintendent.”

Students from Town Creek complete D.A.R.E. program

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students from Town Creek Elementary graduated Friday from the D.A.R.E. program.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, about 62 fifth grade students finished the ten-week course under the leadership of Lieutenant Todd Coring.

“I am very proud of these kids,” said Coring. “Everyone did a great job.”

The sheriff’s office said the D.A.R.E. program curricula focuses on the abuse of gateway drugs. The program offers preventative strategies.

District Attorneys welcome new class of interns

District Attorneys welcome new class of interns

 

LELAND, NC (WECT) – Promising law students joined district attorneys Ben David and Jon David for lunch Monday morning to kickoff their summer internship.

The 16 interns will spend the summer getting hands-on experience inside the courtroom.

"What we're hoping for all of them whether it last a career or just a summer is that they do something really important,” said Ben David. “That they have an experience that changes their lives and the lives of people we represent every day."

The intern class is a collection of law students from the seven law schools from around the state.

Teachers of the year celebrated

Teachers of the year celebrated

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Schools throughout Brunswick County celebrated the announcement of their 2013-14 Teachers of the Year Monday morning!

Teachers of the Year were nominated by their peers and then selected by a team comprised of a community leader, retired educator, and employee from another school within the system. Candidates were observed in their classrooms by the team and then participated in an interview.

Teachers now have the opportunity to participate in the county Teacher of Year process. All school based Teachers of the Year will be celebrated and the county winner will be announced Friday, September 6, 2013 at a special red carpet event.

Secondary schools in Brunswick Co. to begin first for 2013-14 school year

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A spokesperson for the Brunswick County Board of Education announced Tuesday night that for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year, secondary schools will begin first, and elementary schools will begin second.

The decision came after input from the community and a discussion at the board's regularly-called meeting.

The following is a summary of the school start times:

North High      7:45-2:45    South High       7:45-2:45    West High      7:45-2:45

Child hit near bus stop, family wants something to be done

The crash broke Shaun's collarbone and ribs, gave him a concussion and bruised his lung.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A family in Leland says something needs to be done, after their 8-year-old was hit by a truck near his bus stop on Cedar Hill Road Friday.  Highway Patrol Officers say after the school bus pulled away, Shaun Freeman tried to cross the street, when he stepped out from behind the bus he was hit by a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

"I don't even think, or blink, or think about it for the first minute or two, nothing came into focus until I was standing over him," said Sherrick Freeman, after he heard the news he raced to the intersection of Davis Way and Cedar Hill Road. 

"There is no words for it, it's past terrifying," said Freeman. The impact of the truck broke Shaun's collarbone, his pelvis, his ribs, and gave him a concussion and a bruised lung.

Elementary Science Olympiad debuts in Brunswick County

Brunswick County Schools is proud to host the inaugural Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament on Saturday, May 4th at Cedar Grove Middle School.

The following elementary schools are participating: Bolivia, Southport, Supply, Town Creek, Union, Virginia Williamson, and Waccamaw. This is an exciting opportunity to support our students with STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) education.

"We are thrilled to host the Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament in Brunswick County. In the past, three of our schools traveled to New Hanover County to compete. The New Hanover tournament started to reach capacity, thus inspiring us to start our own! We are proud of the commitment of our students and staff who are participating. The fun begins at 8:30 a.m. with the awards ceremony at 1:00 p.m.
