Free 5K to fight obesity

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Brunswick County is hosting a free 5K Saturday to raise awareness of obesity and offer solutions.

Since we can fight against the obesity epidemic for free, the county decided to make the race free.

Everyone is invited to walk, jog, bike or run in the race Saturday morning.  The 5K starts at 9:00 a.m. in Holden Beach under the bridge.

You can register on the day of the race or online at www.sportoften.com (keyword) SEARCH 5K!

The SEARCH 5K is a free event held twice annually under the Holden Beach bridge.

Memorial golf tournament will raise money for late detective's daughter

LELAND, NC (WECT) – The first annual Detective Kyle Jones Memorial Golf Tournament will take place Saturday, May 11, according to event organizers.

Detective Kyle Jones, 41, died at his home in January, and proceeds raised from the event will go towards his daughter’s college fund.

The tournament will include a bouncy house, face painting, Zumba, a photo booth, a DJ, games and more.

Poker run will raise money for Hampstead man diagnosed with cancer

NEW HANOVER, BRUNSWICK and PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A poker run will take place soon to raise money for a local man with cancer.

Matt Thomas, a Hampstead father and husband, was diagnosed with leukemia in March, according to event organizers.

The poker run, scheduled for May 11, will start at Billy Goats on Market Street in Wilmington, and will stop at Slainte in Hampstead, Daddy’s Place, Flounder’s Saloon and Half Time in Leland.

Registration underway for upcoming 5K in Elizabethtown

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Praying for Crystal Abbott Coffman Foundation is hosting a 5k event in May to help raise money to support Coffmann.

According to the foundation, Coffman suffered a severe spinal cord injury last year while heading to her home in Leland. She swerved to avoid a deer that jumped out in front of her vehicle, ran off the road, and lost control.

The 5k for Crystal: Run, Walk, and Roll (wheelchairs) event will be held at the Industrial Park in Elizabethtown on May 11, 2013 starting at 9:30 a.m.

Pre-registration is underway for participants for the event.

The Choice Bus heading to Brunswick Co. schools

The Choice Bus heading to Brunswick Co. schools

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A unique kind of bus will be making its way to Brunswick County soon.

The Choice bus, which is half classroom, half prison cell inside, is meant to show students some of the consequences of dropping out of school.

It will be stopping in Supply, Leland and Shallotte on the following dates, according to a news release:

School registration for the class of 2027 is underway

School registration for the class of 2027 is underway

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The first day of school for the class of 2027 is only four months away! Now is the time to register children for kindergarten.

Registration is currently underway at all neighborhood elementary schools in Brunswick County. Parents are invited to the annual Kindergarten Round-Up night at their child's school on Thursday, April 18 at 6:00 p.m.  Round-Up is a fun-filled family event that includes dinner, tours, classroom visits, and FREE educational materials for families.

Parents are encouraged to enroll their children now and not wait until the first days of school. 

Advance registration helps determine how many classes are needed at each school and help minimize transitions once school begins.

Rabies clinic to be held at several locations in Brunswick Co.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Animal Protective Services in Brunswick County is hosting a rabies clinic this weekend at several locations.

According to officials, the clinic will take place Saturday, April 20. The cost is $6.

Locations and times are as follows:

  • Brunswick Animal Hospital, Supply - 8 am - Noon
  • Brunswick Forest Vet. Hospital, Leland - 8 am - Noon
  • Capeside Animal Hospital, Leland - 8 am – Noon
  • Four Paws Animal Hospital, Southport - 8 am - Noon
  • Leland Veterinarian Hospital, Leland - 8 am – 1 pm
  • Oak Island Animal Hospital, Oak Island - 8 am – Noon
  • Seaside Animal Care – Calabash - 8 am – Noon
  • Animal Shelter, Supply - 9 am – Noon
    (1 yr vaccines only)
