Flip the switch in observance of Earth Hour this weekend

(WECT) - Don't forget to flip the switch in support of Earth Hour, which begins this weekend.

Earth Hour will be held on Saturday, March 23 from 8:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.  People and businesses worldwide will turn off their lights in order to conserve energy.

According to earthhour.org, Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

Gov. McCrory to be keynote speaker for WilmingtonBiz Conference and Expo

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – NC Governor Pat McCrory will be the keynote speaker at Thursday’s WilmingtonBiz Conference and Expo at the Wilmington Convention Center.

According to the Greater Wilmington Business Journal, WilmingtonBiz is the region’s largest business event and attracted more than 2,500 attendees last year.

The event includes a Keynote lunch, an Expo with more than 100 exhibitors and 20 free seminars on a range of timely business topics.

“WilmingtonBiz Expo brings together our region’s business community for a day of learning, making new connections and reconnecting with others,” said Rob Kaiser, publisher of the Greater Wilmington Business Journal, which produces the event.

The Keynote lunch is sold out with 750 attendees and more than 3,000 people are expected to come through the event Thursday.

The WilmingtonBiz Expo Hall will open immediately after the lunch and be open 1:30-7:00 p.m.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Board of Education will visit schools in Brunswick County Thursday.

According to a press release from the school district, the board’s visits will include Supply Elementary, Belville Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Leland Middle, and North Brunswick High School.

Board members include:

  • Mr. Richard Green, Board Attorney
  • Mr. Marty Lawing, County Manager
  • Ms. Debby Gore, Clerk to Board of County Commissioners
  • Mrs. Laura Hunter, Teacher of the Year
  • Mr. Bill Bailey, President, County Parent Advisory Council

Free bird walk scheduled for Thursday

Free bird walk scheduled for Thursday

LELAND, NC (WECT) - Leland Parks and Recreation, along with Wild Bird and Garden, will be hosting a free bird watching walk Thursday, according to a news release.

It will take place from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Brunswick Nature Park. Participants should meet at the picnic shelter inside the park.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you love plants and gardening, you won’t want to miss an upcoming event.

The Brunswick County Commissioners Office announced that there will be a plant sale at the Cooperative Extension Service Office Greenhouse, located at the Government Center (the back parking lot of Building N) April 4, 5, and 6.

Hundreds of colorful plants will be on sale, along with shrubbery and trees.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Families from Lincoln Elementary School will have a chance to strengthen their math and science skills next week.

According to a press release, the school will host a Family Math and Science Night Tuesday.

Students and their families will get to participate in hands-on activities and leave with practical strategies and resources to strengthen their home school partnership in the area of math and science.

There will be door prizes provided by Exxon of Leland, Eddie Romanelli’s and Applebee’s of Leland.

Get ready for 'The Chili Bowl' this weekend

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Get your appetite ready, the newly chartered Kiwanis Club of North Brunswick is hosting its first fundraiser for 2013 – the Chili Bowl.

This chili cook-off and bowling event will take place Saturday, March 9, noon to 2 p.m. at Thunder Alley in the Village at Magnolia Greens.

Tickets are $10 and include one game of bowling, shoe rental, $3 of arcade tokens, chili tasting and voting. Tickets can be purchased at the door the day of the event with cash only. Proceeds will benefit local children’s programs in northern Brunswick County.

According to the club, teams will be comprised of local schools and various community organizations.

The cook-off will be judged in three categories: People Choice Award, People Choice for Best Theme and Spirit, and Judges Choice Award.
