Learn ways to prevent childhood obesity

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Parents in Brunswick County can learn ways to prevent childhood obesity during a free seminar this weekend at the Brunswick Beacon Health Expo.

Terri Mozingo, a registered dietician with Brunswick Novant Medical Center, will present the seminar titled “Helping Parents Prevent Childhood Obesity.”

According to a press release from Brunswick Novatnt Medical Center, the childhood obesity rate in Brunswick County is between 15 and 20 percent. With one in three children in North Carolina aged 10 to 17 overweight or obese, our state and nation are facing a serious issue.

The seminar, which will be held at 10 a.m., is designed for any parent wishing to promote nutrition and a healthy lifestyle in their home.

The health expo will be held at West Brunswick High School Saturday, Feb. 23, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Event will raise money for baby with cystic fibrosis

LELAND, NC (WECT) – Magnolia Greens Golf Course is hosting an event soon to raise money for a baby’s fight against a disease.

According to event organizers, on March 2, the golf course will host the event, called Teeing it up for IV. IV Shaw is an 18-month-old who is suffering from cystic fibrosis.

Leland Celebrates the Arts with Youth Art Day

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The third annual Youth Art Day will take place in Leland this Saturday.

According to town leaders, Youth Art Day is an event for area youth to experience the many aspects of art from visual art to music.

DREAMS of Wilmington will provide several hands-on stations where youth will be able to create visual art projects including pottery and crafts and participate in African Drumming, according to a press release.

The Wilmington Area Woodturners Association will also be at the event to help with the art of woodturning.

Art activities are geared for youth ages 8 and up, but all are welcome to attend.

This program is free of charge thanks to support from the Brunswick Art Council and the North Carolina Arts Council.

The event will take place Saturday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Leland Recreation Building.

The Town of Leland is holding its annual Bark in the Park event on Saturday, March 9 at Brunswick River Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to event organizers.

Operation Medicine Cabinet: Safely dispose of unwanted, expired medication

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Do you have any expired or unwanted medication left in your medicine cabinet that you want to get rid of? If so, you can drop it off soon in Brunswick County, through an event called Operation Medicine Cabinet at Dosher Memorial Hospital.

According to the county's website, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, you can drop off any prescription or non-prescription pills, liquids, needles, or pet medicine at the hospital.

Register for the Lucky Leprechan 5K now

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – While you can register for the Lucky Leprechaun 5K up until race day, the clock is ticking if you want to be guaranteed a T-shirt from the event.

The race will be held at the Winds Beach Resort in Ocean Isle Beach, Saturday, March 16. There will be a shotgun start time of 9 a.m.

Runners are encouraged to dress in St. Patrick’s Day apparel and can even bring their dogs along for the fun.

Proceeds from the race will go towards providing scholarships to low income youth and adults for participation in Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Programs.

LELAND, NC (WECT) – If you're looking for some family fun, Leland’s third annual Youth Art Day will be held next Saturday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to a news release from the parks and recreation department.

The event is intended for children to experience various forms of art and music. There will be many hands-on activities for kids, including pottery, face painting, African drumming and other crafts.
