Brunswick Community College gets nursing grant

Brunswick Community College gets nursing grant

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Brunswick Community College is getting a grant to help nursing instructors prepare to use patient simulation technology. The $9,000 grant comes from the North Carolina Community College System.

The College is partnering with Coastal Carolinas Health Alliance, which is a non-profit made up from nearly a dozen hospitals in North Carolina and South Carolina. CCHA owns one of two mobile simulation labs in the eastern United States. The labs allow life-like training without real world consequences.

Brunswick Community College will train its faculty how to use the lab next week.

Brunswick Sheriff’s Office hosts free Fall Festival on Friday

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The 4th annual Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Fall Festival is free to all and happening from 6 until 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28.

Activities include: a haunted hay ride, cake walk, pumpkin decorating contest, face painting, costume contest, fishing booth, duck hunting, basketball, fortune telling, seat belt simulator, smoke house, minute to win it contests, and a mouse in the haystack game.

Free hot dogs, drinks and candy will also be available while supplies last. The Fall Festival will take place in the center of the walking trail in front of the Government Complex in Bolivia.

Unity Group of North Brunswick to hold a Craft Fair on Oct. 15

LELAND, NC (WECT) -  The Unity Group's Craft Fair is going to be held on Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Leland Municipal Park, 102 Town Hall Drive.

This event gives local craftspeople, businesses, candidates and other vendors the opportunity to showcase their products and services. Concessions will be available.

There is no cost to attend. Booths are available at $35, with all proceeds to benefit the North Carolina Christmas Festival's Children's Acitivites.

Deadline to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance is Wednesday

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Today is the deadline to file for Disaster Unemployment Assistance in New Hanover County.

According to a news release from the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina, workers or business owners who meet the following criteria may be eligible for benefits:

  • Individuals who are unemployed due to the disaster, and do not qualify for regular unemployment insurance benefits
  • Self-employed individuals and small business owners who lost income due to the disaster
  • Individuals who were prevented from working due to an injury caused by the disaster
  • Individuals who have become the major supplier of household income due to the disaster-related death or injury of the previous major supplier of household income
  • Individuals who are unable to reach their job or self-employment location because they must travel through the affected area and are prevented from doing so by the disaster
  • Individuals who were to commence employment or self-employment but were prevented by the disaster

There is no waiting week period to file for benefits, according to the news release. Affected workers can receive benefits dated back to the week ending Sept. 3, 2011.

Flu shots available all across Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It’s that time of year again – flu season. The Brunswick County Health Department is making it easy for residents to get vaccinated.

In addition to giving shots at the Health Department inside the Government Complex in Bolivia, the Health Department will go into the community to make it as convenient as possible to get a shot.

The flu vaccine is available in the shot form or flu mist for people under the age of 50. The high dose vaccine is recommended for people 65 and older.

No appointment is necessary to get a flu shot at the Health Department. Bring your ID and insurance card between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The vaccination is $35 or $50 for the higher dosage.
