Christmas festival, parade to take place in Leland

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The 20th annual North Carolina Christmas Festival and Parade will take place in Leland Friday, Dec. 7 and 8, according to an event organizer.

Friday night, the festival will kick off at 7 p.m. in the North Brunswick Shopping Center with a street dance with the band Kickin’ Ace’s. Saturday, a parade will kick off on Village Road at 10 a.m., where traffic will be blocked off an hour beforehand.

Laundromat hosting coat drive for those in need

LELAND, NC (WECT) – Have any extra coats lying around that don't fit anymore? Don't throw them away just yet -- Lucky Spin Laundromat in Leland will be hosting a winter coat drive Nov. 27-29, according to an event organizer.

Any unwanted coats will be washed and fixed, if necessary, then given to those in need.

The Laundromat is located at 1725 Reed Road.

Save your Halloween candy wrappers for aquarium to recycle

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Halloween may be over, but the recycling process is an ongoing event, and officials at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher are encouraging local residents and students to help by collecting used candy wrappers to recycle.

According to a news release from an aquarium spokesperson, folks and students from classes around New Hanover and Brunswick counties are invited to participate with the wrapper recycling.

Anyone is welcome to contribute, but any participating class with the most candy wrappers by weight to the aquarium Dec. 1 will win a free outreach program with a live animal presentation.

WARM helps rebuild homes for those who can't

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry is hosting a luncheon Thursday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

The luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

WARM brings people together to rebuild homes and restore hope for low-income residents, many of whom are elderly or disabled.

According to the organization’s website, WARM works with individuals, organizations and businesses in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender Counties.

Labrador/husky mix looking in need of a furrever friend

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A Labrador/husky mix in Brunswick County is in need of a home, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s website.

Cozmo is reportedly very playful, walks well on a leash and responds to basic commands.

Fees to adopt dogs over 6 months old is $65.00, and $46.00 for dogs under 6 months.

Family asking for public’s help in recovering stolen dog

Family asking for public’s help in recovering stolen dog

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A distraught Leland family is asking for help to find their family dog, which they say was stolen.

According to Michele Kelly, her Chihuahua/dachshund mix named Ratt was taken from the parking lot of Yummi Yummi Saturday around 12:30 p.m. Ratt was seen being taken by a woman in a burgundy car.

Kelly says the dog, a 3-year-old female, is very particular and will not eat unless she is returned home.

Anyone with any information on the dog’s whereabouts is asked to call 910-512-3042.

Kelly says there will be a reward for a safe return.

The family has filed a police report.
