Museum honors conch found stranded on the beach

OCEAN ISLE, NC (WECT)-The folks at the Museum of Coastal Carolina plan to celebrate the first anniversary of one of its residents.

"Irene", is Florida horse conch. It was found on August 27, 2011, just a few days after Hurricane Irene blew thru Southeastern, North Carolina.

According to staff members at the museum, Judy Sobota was walking along Ocean Isle Beach when she saw the conch stranded on the beach. Sobota borrowed a pail from a family on the beach and took it to the Museum of Coastal Carolina.

On August 29, 2011, volunteers at the museum's touch tank named the conch "Irene". A year later the conch is still alive in the touch tank.
