BRUNSWICK COUNTY,
NC (WECT) - Hundreds of people in Brunswick County are smiling a bit wider on
Friday after receiving free dental care.

The Coastal Cosmetic
Family Dentistry in Bolivia hosted the second annual Dentistry From The
Heart event, providing a free day of dental care to more than 150 residents.

The line for
patients began as early as midnight the night before for the opportunity to
receive free dental services.

Last year,
volunteers and sponsors provided 150 patients with a free extraction, filling
or cleaning and in turn, donated more than $50,000 in free dental care.

This year, organizers expect they will serve more than 180 patients.

Dr. Aaron
Wilharm says this is a great way for them to give back to the community.

The event is a fun field day that showcases the best of the best in the following fitness events: one-mile run, 800 meter run, 600 meter run, 400 meter run, 100 yard dash, 50 yard dash, the standing long jump, pull ups, flex arm hang, and 4 x 100 relay.

Students compete in two age categories, 8-9 year olds and 10+.
The event begins at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 2 at South Brunswick High School.

Brunswick County purchases drug to help prevent shingles

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A drug on its way to the Brunswick County health department could help prevent shingles, but it won't come cheap.

County commissioners approved a request from the health department for $14,000 to buy more doses of a drug called Zostavax.

The shingles vaccine
is approved for the prevention of shingles in individuals 50 years of age and
older. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends the shingles
vaccine for adults aged 60 years and older.

The health department is receiving enough money to buy 70 doses of the drug.  Patients can purchase the vaccine for $200.

Health department officials say it's cheaper to buy from them than most pharmacies.

Leland considers smoking ban on town land

LELAND, NC - (WECT) - The Town of Leland will be considering making their campus smoking free, according to the town's mayor.

Mayor Brenda Bozeman says during the April 18th meeting, town leaders will debate amending their code so smoking is not allowed in buildings, town cars or on town property. She says currently, people do not smoke inside, but says there is no written code outlining smoking on town property.

She says, if the board decides to ban smoking, people will no longer be allowed to take their smoke breaks right outside of buildings, instead they will have to drive off of town land.
