Brunswick County Schools oppose approval of new charter school

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Brunswick County Schools is coming out in opposition of the approval of South Brunswick Charter School. In a Local Education Agency Impact Statement, which will be sent to the NC Department of Public Instruction's Office of Charter Schools, the district cites two reasons it's against the charter school.

One of the reasons is financial.

Roger Bacon Academy, Inc., which is owned by Baker Mitchell, Jr., will manage South Brunswick Charter School.

According to the statement from Brunswick Schools, "Mr. Mitchell's private companies have continuously profited, through management fees and rent from taxpayer dollars."

The district states that tax returns show management fees paid to Mitchell totaled nearly $16 million for the 5-year period from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2012.

We're told the money Mitchell gets from the state doesn't just pay his salary, it is also goes toward the salaries of his staff.

Leland leaders thinking outside the box on the budget

LELAND,
NC (WECT) – A potential change in Leland's financial plan could cause the town
to miss out on more than half a million dollars of potential income. However, it's all part of a long term growth plan to draw in more business and
attract new development.

Town Manager David Hollis presented the budget last week, announcing a new plan
to reduce building permit fees to just $1.

He says a drastic decrease in inspection fees is the first step in enticing
developers to come to town.

Hollis
estimated the total inspection fee for one house is $3,000 right now.

Based on last year's numbers, the cut in fees means that Leland would likely
miss out on approximately $600,000 if the proposal is accepted.

Hollis
says he is confident the town will eventually see a return in revenue from new
developers taking advantage of the potential incentive.

How hybrid car owners could pay more to the state

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) – A plan to collect money from certain motorists could put the savings from fuel-efficient cars into the state's budget.

Anyone owning a hybrid car would pay an extra $50 to register and renew the registration for the vehicle, according to the State Senate's proposed budget plan. The fee doubles for electric car owners.

Gabrielle Fuller bought her hybrid for the same reasons more people do: less emissions from the car and more savings at the pump. She said it seems like state lawmakers are punishing people for doing the right thing.

"It's irritating," she said. "I want to save money by having a fuel-efficient car and the government wants to charge me because I'm being conscientious."

The college student balances two jobs. Fuller's owned her Honda Insight for less than a year, and she said she'll definitely buy another hybrid when it's time, regardless of the proposed fee.

Army couple surprised by media attention

An Army soldier surprised on live television with wife 100 pounds lighter is overwhelmed with all of the media attention. His wife is loving it.

LELAND, NC (WECT) - One week after a soldier returning home from Afghanistan is surprised by his wife 100 pounds lighter, the unexpected continues.

The couple has been bombarded with phone calls from media sources across the world.

"It's stressful," Specialist Larry Shaffer said from his home in Leland. "Its made it a little bit harder to adjust because I can't really relax like I want to without the phone going off ten million times a day and there have been times I wanted to pull the phone out the wall and have it unplugged," Shaffer says with a smile.

Specialist Shaffer was greeted last week by a throng of family and friends at the Wilmington International Airport. The Army soldier was returning home after a one year deployment in Afghanistan. In the midst of the all the pomp and circumstance his wife, Misty, emerged half the size she was when he last saw her a year ago.
