IRS fines town of Navassa $35,000

NAVASSA, NC (WECT) - The town of Navassa received a letter from the IRS saying the town has been charged a penalty of nearly $35,000 for failure to file W-2 forms with the federal government.

The letter is dated January 2nd this year.  It says that both the IRS and the Social Security Administration had been in contact with the town trying to secure the W-2s.

The letter states "the penalty for intentional disregard of the filing requirements is the greater of $100 per required return or 10 percent of the aggregate amount of items require to be reported."

Navassa has until January 23rd to appeal the decision if town leaders feel they have enough evidence that shows they shouldn't be charged penalties.
