BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – One person is dead after an afternoon fire in Brunswick County.
A home at 6495 Farm Meadows Drive in Leland caught fire around 12:30 p.m., according to Del Routh, a spokesperson for the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.
After Northwest firefighters made a sweep of the residence, they found 47-year-old Donna Byrd Hambrick inside and immediately began trying to revive her, Routh said. She was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where she died.
Hambrick's husband, Scott, said, "To be honest with you, I'm numb. I don't know what to think. I feel like I've lost my whole world. It's hard."
Donna and Scott were married for 25 years. They lived at their home on Farm Meadows Drive for the past eight years, he said. Now, Scott has to try to move on, "it's going to be hard, very hard. She was my whole world. I feel like I have nothing now," said Hambrick.
The Hambrick family is no stranger to heartache. Just a couple of years ago, they lost a family member during a car crash in Brunswick County.
No foul play is suspected. The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the incident with the fire marshal's office.
Family members were at the home and said they found out about the fire around 3:30 p.m. The family is now asking for help to recover from the fire. The American Red Cross says they have not received any calls for assistance from this fire. But, a spokesperson for the Cape Fear Chapter says "if we are contacted, we will send a caseworker out to meet those affected."
To contact the American Red Cross, call (910) 762-9663, or go by their office which is located at 1102 South 16th Street Wilmington, NC 28401.
