Prank call leads to significant damage at Best Western in Leland
News

LELAND, NC (WECT) - Leland police officers are investigating a phone hoax that led to "a significant amount of property damage" at the Best Western Hotel over the weekend.

Officers say someone called the Best Western over night Sunday morning, asked to be transferred to a room and then told the person inside to activate the fire sprinkler because there was a gas leak.  After the visitor did so, the caller hung up.

There was no gas leak. No one was injured, but there was a lot of damage to the room.

Leland Police say this type of prank is happening nationwide. They are considering working with federal officials on this investigation.

If you can help, call (910) 371-1100 or leave an anonymous tip by texting 847411, then 411LPD and add your tip.
