BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Highway 133 in Brunswick County was closed Tuesday afternoon due to a fatal car crash, according to Anthony Marzano, the county's Emergency Services Director.
The wreck took place near the Brunswick Cove nursing home.
Trooper John King says multiple witnesses saw Jessica Barfoot, 26, of Southport, driving a Pontiac Torrent when she fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into oncoming traffic, where she hit a truck head-on and was instantly killed.
The Pontiac and the truck were both traveling at about 55 miles per hour.
Barfoot worked at Well Care Home Health Care and was transporting a nursing home patient back home from a doctor's appointment in Wilmington. She had just gotten married Saturday in Holden Beach.
Witnesses to the accident who also left the same doctor's office at the same time noticed that Barfoot looked very exhausted while she was waiting for her patient's appointment to be completed. Authorities say she may have been tired due to working the third shift.
The passenger with Barfoot, a 66-year-old female, went to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. She was treated and released Tuesday afternoon. It was her vehicle that Barfoot was driving.
The driver of the truck involved was not injured and refused treatment.
Jackson is survived by her husband, Michael. They have one child together.
This is the sixth fatal accident in the last 12 days, just in Brunswick County alone.
