BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Navassa board members expressed frustration Thursday about losing a court case over a police dog.
The town tried to win back a police dog from former officer Kevin Smith.
Navassa leaders said they fought to get the dog back because they spent thousands to train it.
But Smith had witnesses and documents that showed the dog was his to keep.
Smith resigned from his position with the police department after he pulled over Mayor Eulis Willis for a DWI. He claimed the mayor was harassing him after the incident.
Now, Smith says the town is withholding some of his paychecks.
A representative from the NC Police Benevolent Association was at Thursday's meeting on Smith's behalf to fight for money that Smith says the town still owes him.
The PBA determined that the check has been released to Smith for his vacation time.
Now, the PBA is looking into if the town still owes Smith for 1,400 hours of overtime for which he has not been paid.
