DWI court could soon mean longer wait times for some | News

COLUMBUS and BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Starting soon, folks sitting in DWI court could expect their wait times to increase.

According to District Attorney Jon David, Monday night, DWI court in Columbus County didn't end until 10:30 p.m.

David says it's due to cases being pushed back after his office lost a DWI grant last year, adding that the Administration Office of Courts did give his office an extra judge and prosecutor, along with funding.

But come March 1, that funding will end.

Therefore, DWI cases in Columbus and Brunswick Counties will be heard along with other cases, which could mean many more late nights for prosecutors, bailiffs, judges, and those on trial.

According to David, his office has put together a comprehensive grant that would provide funding for a year-and-a-half. However, he says that, if approved, that grant would take months to start.

DWI court is normally held twice a week in Columbus and Brunswick counties.
