BRUNSWICK COUNTY (WECT) - Detectives in Brunswick County have arrested a woman in connection to what they say is their single largest counterfeit bust. The Secret Service called it significant as well.
Luann Simmons was arrested and charged with false pretenses and possession of five or more counterfeit instruments.
Detectives teamed up with the Secret Service for the investigation that led them to more than $73,000 worth of fake money.
Simmons allegedly tried to use the fake bills at a local consignment shop called A Little Bit of Everything. When law enforcement showed up to question her they found 15 fake $100 bills.
Simmons is a live-in care taker in the area and had allegedly found the money and assumed it was real.
Simmons took detectives to one of her clients home where she was living to show them the rest of the money.
According to detectives, the fake money was being stored in a shoe box and was bundled using real bank bands from 1997 and was printed on resume paper with an ink jet printer.
