(Wilmington, NC, May, 2013) -  The YWCA Lower Cape Fear is pleased to announce that it has received a $15,000 grant from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation for the Fluid Recovery program, which was developed in partnership with the Pretty in Pink Foundation. The Fluid Recovery program is modeled after the YWCA USA’s Encoreplus program that was created over 30 years ago.

LELAND, NC (WECT) – Golfers in Brunswick County will raise money to help the family of a fallen law enforcement officer.

Detective Kyle Jones from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office died unexpectedly in January.

Jones was a 19-year-veteran of law enforcement. According to the sheriff's office, he served the citizens of Columbus County from 1994-2000, and served Brunswick County from 2000 until his death.

Memorial golf tournament will raise money for late detective's daughter

LELAND, NC (WECT) – The first annual Detective Kyle Jones Memorial Golf Tournament will take place Saturday, May 11, according to event organizers.

Detective Kyle Jones, 41, died at his home in January, and proceeds raised from the event will go towards his daughter’s college fund.

The tournament will include a bouncy house, face painting, Zumba, a photo booth, a DJ, games and more.

Poker run will raise money for Hampstead man diagnosed with cancer

NEW HANOVER, BRUNSWICK and PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A poker run will take place soon to raise money for a local man with cancer.

Matt Thomas, a Hampstead father and husband, was diagnosed with leukemia in March, according to event organizers.

The poker run, scheduled for May 11, will start at Billy Goats on Market Street in Wilmington, and will stop at Slainte in Hampstead, Daddy’s Place, Flounder’s Saloon and Half Time in Leland.

Adopt-an-Angel is in the top 200 for a $25,000 State Farm Grant.

The group encourages pet adoptions in New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick Counties.

Get ready for 'The Chili Bowl' this weekend

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Get your appetite ready, the newly chartered Kiwanis Club of North Brunswick is hosting its first fundraiser for 2013 – the Chili Bowl.

This chili cook-off and bowling event will take place Saturday, March 9, noon to 2 p.m. at Thunder Alley in the Village at Magnolia Greens.

Tickets are $10 and include one game of bowling, shoe rental, $3 of arcade tokens, chili tasting and voting. Tickets can be purchased at the door the day of the event with cash only. Proceeds will benefit local children’s programs in northern Brunswick County.

According to the club, teams will be comprised of local schools and various community organizations.

The cook-off will be judged in three categories: People Choice Award, People Choice for Best Theme and Spirit, and Judges Choice Award.

4 Brunswick Co. Papa John’s participating in fundraiser for nonprofit group

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Several area Papa John’s will soon be participating in a fundraiser to benefit Communities in Schools in Brunswick County, which is a nonprofit organization that encourages students in the community to stay in school. 

According to a news release from a CIS spokesperson, on the first Wednesday of each month, Papa John’s locations in Leland, Shallotte, Southport and Sunset Beach will donate 25 percent of the day’s sales of certain pizza specials to support programs and services that CIS provides.
