Vendor applications being accepted for Leland's Market

LELAND, NC (WECT) – The Town of Leland’s Market will kick off in May, but applications are being accepted now for vendors.

Hand-made crafts, fresh produce and local baked goods will be sold during the events, which will take place on May 12, June 9, July 14 and Aug. 11.

If you’d like to be a vendor, you must fill out a form and send a $10 non-refundable application fee. Click here to download a copy of the application.

Entrepreneurs eligible for area awards

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –To promote businesses, entrepreneurs and higher-paying jobs in the area, UNCW’s Entrepreneurship Center and the Greater Wilmington Business Journal will be presenting the Coastal Entrepreneur Awards this spring, according to a release from a Business Journal spokesperson.

Any company, new or old, in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties is eligible, and according to a statement, businesses submitted for consideration “…Must be actively engaged in entrepreneurial activity – creating new products or services for people in the Wilmington region or beyond.”

Companies can either submit applications themselves or be nominated by clicking here.

Nominees will go through two rounds of judging. Category winners will be chosen by a group of judges selected from area business leaders as well as the competition’s sponsors.

Leland plans couponing workshops to help cut grocery bills in half

LELAND, NC (WECT) – The Leland Parks and Recreation Department has planned workshops for cutting grocery bills in half by using coupons.

The workshops will include the basics of couponing, where to find coupons, rules of saving in the grocery store, coupon organization, grocery story policies, stockpiling, budgeting and the use of online databases to assist with couponing, according to a news release. Plus each participant will receive a coupon guidebook and $30 worth of coupons to get started.

The classes will be held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. beginning on March 14. They’ll take place at the Leland Classroom Annex, located at 102 Town Hall Drive.

The cost to attend a class is $12 and space is limited. Call the Leland Parks and Recreation Department at 910-332-3823 for more information or to reserve a spot.

Brunswick County boasts drop in unemployment rate

Brunswick County boasts drop in unemployment rate

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Brunswick County’s unemployment rate decreased 0.6 percent in November when compared to the results from a year ago.

Of the 49,144 people in the labor force, 5,106 are unemployed, according to a report from the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Employment Security. That 10.4 percent rate is down slightly from the 10.5 percent in October, which is an estimate subject to large seasonal patterns.

Brunswick County landfill, schools closed for holidays

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County landfill will be closed on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 23-24 and Saturday, Dec. 31 for the holidays. The county convenience sites will be closed on Saturday only.

Brunswick County Schools will be closed from Wednesday, Dec. 21 through Monday, Jan. 2 for schools on the traditional calendar. The Early College High School will be closed from Dec. 21 through Jan. 5 for students.

Six of nine ABC Boards in Brunswick Co. saw profits decrease

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The number of liquor and mixed beverages sales in the state were up last year, according to the 2011 North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control’s annual report.

Between June 30, 2010 and June 30, 2011, the report says $746,523,521 worth of liquor and mixed beverages were sold.

In Brunswick County, the ABC Board in Belville reported the largest amount of gross sales with $2,355,160. However, Belville lost $4,670—the most in the county—after the cost of liquor, operating expenses and state taxes were subtracted.

Southport accounted for the largest profit at $256,841, which is an increase of over 8% from the previous year’s amount.

Six of the nine ABC Boards in Brunswick County saw profits decrease from 2010 to 2011.
