Sign up now for Groundhog Day 5K in Leland

LELAND, NC (WECT) – A race is a great way to stay in shape, especially if it’s part of your New Year’s resolution.

Westgate Nature Park in Leland will be hosting a Groundhog Day 5K Saturday, Feb. 2, according to a website for the event, and it’s not too early to register.

The park is located on the south side of Highway 17, and phase I includes paved and elevated trails for hiking and biking, playgrounds, a picnic area and more.

Athletes bring home 69 medals from state games

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – More than 60 people from Brunswick County traveled to Raleigh to compete in the North Carolina Senior Games.

The games took place throughout September and October and Brunswick County took home 69 medals.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the fall State Games.

Low scoring game for the Scorpions and Eagles

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The North Brunswick Scorpions were on the road Friday night, traveling to take on the East Bladen Eagles.

It was a low scoring game, both teams scoring only in the single digits. Their combined score totaled less than 15.

The Eagles took the win by one point.

Final score: North Brunswick 6, East Bladen 7.

The Cougars travel north in hopes of a win

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – There will be a battle on the gridiron in Brunswick County Friday night.

In week nine of the high school football season, South Brunswick travels north, where the Scorpions will host Friday night’s matchup.

With a 2-5 record, the Cougars hope to take down the North Brunswick team that boasts a 5-3 record.

South Columbus defeats North Brunswick

South Columbus defeats North Brunswick

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The South Columbus Stallions are the two-time defending league champion of the Waccamaw title.

They played host to North Brunswick Friday night who went into the game 1-1 in league play.

South Columbus jumped on the scoreboard first and took an 8-0 lead. They continued to lead throughout the night and ultimately came out on top.

The Stallions defeated North Brunswick 26-6.

Free tennis play day will be held in Brunswick Co.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Brunswick County Tennis Association is sponsoring a free tennis play day on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Shallotte Park, South Brunswick High School, Cedar Grove Middle School, and Northwest Park, according to a news release issued by the Brunswick County Tennis Association.

This event is for kids ages 11-15.

North and West Bwk. battle for first place

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It was a battle for first place in Shallotte Friday night. Even though West Brunswick only had one win on the season going into the game, another win would put them in first place in their division.

West Brunswick was leading 28-12 in the second half, but North Brunswick put up points early in the third quarter, but their efforts wasn’t enough.

West Brunswick comes out on top with 49 points beating North Brunswick who only scored 26.

This Friday West Brunswick will be at East Bladen and North Brunswick hosts West Bladen.
