Leland hosts family-friendly Olympic Day celebration

LELAND, NC (WECT) – Leland Parks and Recreation will host an Olympic Day celebration on Saturday, June 23.

Children will be able to participate in variations of their favorite Olympic events, including track, long jump, soccer, and seated volleyball, according to a news release from the Town of Leland.

The celebration will be held at Leland Municipal Park, located at 102 Town Hall Drive, from 5 until 8 p.m. At dusk, the Town will show “Soul Surfer” on an outdoor movie screen.

“We are excited to take part in Olympic Day and inspire kids in the Leland community,” stated Leland Mayor Brenda Bozeman in a news release. “The Town is proud to support the Olympic Movement and encourage children to lead healthy, active lives.”

Scotchman operators to raise money for Boy Scouts

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Each year, VPS Convenience Store Group, operator of the Scotchman Convenience Stores, holds a fundraiser to benefit the boy Scouts of America, Cape Fear Council.

A dinner and auction will be held at the Holiday Inn Resort at Wrightsville Beach Tuesday night. A golf tournament will take place at the Cape Fear National Golf Club at Brunswick Forest in Leland Wednesday morning.

All money raised from these events goes directly to the boy Scouts to provide financial assistance for any scout who needs help to participate in activities or attend summer camp.

According to a press release sent from the organization, VPS has contributed more than $1.1 million to the Cape Fear council Scouting program.

The Cape Fear Council Boy Scout program is headquartered in Wilmington, NC and serves over 14,000 persons through 2,100 volunteer leaders and more than 200 chartered organizations.

Duo charged with golf course break-ins near Winnabow

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Investigators are still looking for some stolen property, but the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office charged two people for the recent break-ins at the Olde Fort Golf Course in the Winnabow area.

Detectives arrested Michael David Nucci, 23, of the 9000 block of Sykes Street, and Nathan Atlas Hale, 16, of the 2000 block of Davis Street, on Thursday.

A month-long investigation led detectives to Nucci’s home, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Del Routh. Both subjects were reportedly found with stolen property at the residence.

Both of the Winnabow residents were charged with four counts of felony breaking and entering and four counts of larceny after breaking and entering.

Register by June 14 for CFCC Golf League tournament

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The ninth annual CFCC Golf League captain’s choice tournament and awards banquet will be held on Friday, June 22 at Magnolia Greens Golf Course in Leland.

Sign-in will begin at 1 p.m. and play will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a shotgun start.

Contests will include closest to the pin on all par threes, longest drive, and putting. Mulligans will be sold three for $10 on the course. The top three teams and the last place team will win prizes.

Current golf league members will be charged $55 for golf, cart, practice balls, dinner and prizes. Guest golfers will be offered the same deal for $65. Guests who would like to only attend the dinner and awards banquet will have to pay $15.

The deadline to register and pay for the tournament is 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 14. Checks must be made payable to John Ward-CFCC Golf Tournament and can be turned into John Upton in the personnel office (GAB-145).

Town Creek Park awarded $359K by Parks and Recreation Trust Fund

Town Creek Park awarded $359K by Parks and Recreation Trust Fund

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – More than $350,000 of a $1.56 million grant from the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund will be distributed to Brunswick County, according to a news release from Governor Bev Perdue.

The County will use $$359,354 to work on Town Creek Park.

Grants were also awarded to the City of Wilmington for the Cross City Trail ($219,308) and New Hanover County for Castle Hayne Park ($287,817).

“Creating new jobs has been one of my top priorities,” Perdue stated via the news release. “These grants put people back to work building new parks and new facilities. They also enhance our state’s quality of life by creating recreational opportunities and protecting significant open spaces. CEOs consistently rank North Carolina one of the nation’s best places for doing business because of our state’s excellent quality of life.”

Since 1995, the Parks and Recreation Authority has reportedly awarded 696 grants worth $156 million.
